DIVERSITY

I have had multiple experiences with social, economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds throughout the courses I have taken at Auburn University and volunteer work. It is important as a future educator to celebrate all of my students and their unique experiences. Thankfully I have gotten some first-hand experiences of being exposed to diversity and will help me be more aware of what will be in my future classroom. This will also shape me into the teacher my students will need me to be. My classroom will be welcoming with open arms for each and every student, despite their background. Below are some diverse experiences I have had throughout my college years at Auburn.

Immersion Experience Paper

In a class, COUN 2000, we had to write a cultural immersion paper that had our experiences about the act of surrounding yourself with the culture of a place. This might mean living with family and helping out on their farm, or simply sharing a meal with a local. Cultural immersion is a unique experience that can open doors to a deeper understanding of an unfamiliar place. One of the best things about traveling and living abroad is meeting new people and fostering friendships with others. Meeting people who have different perspectives, backgrounds, and life experiences can be a transformative experience because it often shapes you into a more open-minded individual.

My immersion experience for this paper was first held in the student center and was being hosted by the Black Student Union and SPECTRUM which is an on-campus LGBTQ+ community. This was called “No Justice. No Pride.” It was a BSU general assembly parting with spectrum.

Ron Clark Service Learning Journal Entry

In my FOUN 3100, we watched the movie "Ron Clark". This movie was about a man named Ron Clark leads a comfortable life as a successful elementary school teacher, earning the respect of the community. However, he knows there are students elsewhere who need him more. Following his inner calling, Clark uproots to New York City, hoping to make a difference for the disenfranchised youths the school system has left behind. Clark makes it his mission to turn around the worst students, even though he knows his job is on the line. Here we answered questions involving his change in diversity and how he handled the situations. We also reflected on how we would act on the situations.

Story Book Farms Reflection

I have had experience volunteering at a place called Storybook Farms in Auburn, AL. This experience was very informative to say the least. I had no true prior experience in assisting with disabled kids before my time at Storybook Farms. This reflection explains how my firsthand was and what it takes to help these kids live normal lives.

School Counselors and Students with Diabetes Research Paper

This paper was a research project class including the study of diabetes. It describes the different types and how it can majorly change some people's life and how stressful it can be. This also includes facts and other articles leading up to this research for COUN 3980 also known as Counseling Research Experience.
